Troubles facing the Trucking Industry
How this affects the Steel Industry January 2011

HIGHER RATES-The Journal of Commerce Magazine News Story

Refueled truckload carriers set sights on higher pricing. Truckload carriers are rolling out of a strong fourth quarter ready to raise rates. Whether shippers are ready to pay higher prices is the billion-dollar question, but many truck customers may find they have little choice. Some of the nation's largest publicly owned truckload haulers improved their profit margins in the fourth quarter even when load volume began to flag.

DIESEL PRICES INCREASE- quote from TruckingInfo.com

Diesel prices continued their upward trend this week, rising an alarming 7.5 cents to hit a new post-2008 high of $3.513.  It was the largest week to week price increase since April 2010, the Department of Energy noted on Monday in its weekly price roundup.  Overall, diesel is up to 74.4 cents per gallon compared to the same timeframe one year ago.

SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS- This is a quote from Marie Studniarz, Director of Pricing & Administration ADS Logistics Co, LLC

Trucking Bankruptcies In short, the steel hauling/trucking industry is forecasted to only get worse. Many carriers are increasing their rates as trucks become harder and harder to come by. There is a definite shortage in drivers which is predicted to only worsen as the age of the current drivers near retirement with little or no new,

younger recruits entering the work force.

NEW PROPOSAL ON HOW MANY HOURS DRIVERS  ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE

WASHINGTON - Trucking companies accustomed to letting drivers haul goods all night may face federal restrictions that would curb the practice and might add almost $2 billion to the industry's annual operating costs.

The rules, which a Transportation Department agency proposed Dec. 23, may cut an hour of driving time per day for the nation's 1.6 million long-haul truck drivers. Truckers also would have to take breaks after driving seven consecutive hours and wouldn't be allowed to work as many consecutive days of long shifts as they can now.
